Partisan Memorial Cemetery

Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar, built in 1965, is one of the largest anti-fascist monuments in the Balkans. Designed by architect Bogdan Bogdanović, it features a monumental hillside pathway and around 700 tombstones for fallen Partisan fighters. Constructed with limestone, reclaimed materials, and traditional techniques, it was inaugurated by Josip Broz Tito in 1965.
Despite its cultural and historical significance, the site has suffered repeated damage, neglect, and acts of vandalism over time.
Restoration efforts began in 2005, but the cemetery remains a contested heritage site requiring ongoing protection and a comprehensive conservation strategy.
Recognised by the 7 ME Programme, it is considered a powerful symbol of anti-fascist memory that merits preservation for future generations. The site is still at risk.
