Europe for Culture – Culture for Europe: A historic commitment to culture in the European Union

On 18 June, the European Union has reached a significant milestone in its cultural policy journey. The Presidents of the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, and the European Parliament have signed the Joint Declaration on Culture, “Europe for Culture – Culture for Europe.”
This marks the first time in EU history that all three institutions have come together behind a shared political commitment to culture, sending a powerful message about its importance for Europe’s present and future.

The declaration represents the first flagship achievement of the Culture Compass for Europe, a new strategic framework designed to strengthen the role of culture across the European project. It formally recognises culture as a cornerstone of European democracy, identity, creativity, and resilience.
The document also reaffirms support for key principles that underpin cultural policies across Europe, including freedom of artistic expression, cultural rights, and fair working conditions for artists and cultural and creative professionals. By doing so, it highlights culture not only as a source of heritage and expression but also as a driving force for innovation, social cohesion, and democratic participation.
Importantly, this milestone belongs as much to the cultural and creative sectors as it does to the European institutions. It reflects the collective efforts of artists, cultural organisations, and creative professionals who contribute every day to shaping a vibrant and inclusive Europe.
