THE PROJECT

Moto Contrario is a musical and narrative experience that blends words, sounds, and images to give voice to one of the most delicate and urgent issues of our time: mental health. In this new orchestral version, the Quartetto Indaco – ensemble in residence at Milano Classica – leads the orchestra’s strings in an expanded reinterpretation of the original project, enhancing its expressive potential according to the QuBE (Quartet Based Ensemble) model.

Moto Contrario is a multisensory journey that explores music as a metaphor for disorientation and redemption. The narrative unfolds through the words of Clara Wieck-Schumann, wife of composer Robert Schumann, and Sarah Kim-Cross, an Anglo-Korean violinist who shares her personal experience in coping with mental health challenges. Two lives, separated by time and space, converge along a shared emotional path.

The music of Robert Schumann, who spent his final years in the Endenich psychiatric hospital and sought to express his inner torment through composition, intertwines with original music and arrangements created for the occasion by Cosimo Carovani, cellist of the Quartetto Indaco and composer in residence at Milano Classica. The result is brought to life through the evocative imagery of artist Letizia Castellano, creating an immersive experience that engages all the senses and invites the audience to reflect on one of the most pressing and sensitive issues of our time.
