PROJECT
Moto Contrario
Moto Contrario is a multi-sensory journey that explores music as a metaphor for loss and redemption. The narrative unfolds through the words of Clara Wieck-Schumann, wife of the composer Robert Schumann, and Sarah Kim-Cross, an Anglo-Korean violinist who shares her personal experience in the struggle against mental health diffi culties. Two experiences far apart in time and space, but which meet along a common emotional path. The music of Robert Schumann, who in his last years was hospitalised in the psychiatric hospital of Endenich and tried to give voice to his inner torment through composition, is interwoven with the original music and arrangements composed for the occasion by Cosimo Carovani, cellist of the Quartetto Indaco. The result takes shape through the evocative images of artist Letizia Castellano, creating an immersive experience that involves all the senses and brings the spectator face to face with one of the most delicate and topical themes of our time.

MUSIC PROGRAMME
The musical programme of Moto Contrario features a selection of pieces by Robert Schumann alongside original compositions by Cosimo Carovani. Each piece tells a story, each note expresses an emotion-tracing an intimate path from shadow to light, from inner torment to rebirth. Schumann’s poignant melodies merge with Carovani’s contemporary soundscape, creating a timeless dialogue that gives voice to suffering, resilience and the profound therapeutic power of music.

The quartet will be accompanied by the performance of actresses Olivia Manescalchi and Sarah Kim-Cross.

Concert open to the public

The concert is part of the poetic imagery of the exhibition Ferdinand Hodler – Filippo Franzoni. An artistic partnership – which can be visited free of charge at the end of the exhibition – thanks to the dialogue between the figures of Robert Schumann and Filippo Franzoni.

In collaboration with LAC Musica, LAC edu and MASI Lugano
