In music, “Moto Contrario” refers to the movement of melodic lines in opposite directions. This evocative concept becomes the foundation for an immersive performance that leads the audience through the intertwined narratives of two extraordinary figures: romantic composer Robert Schumann, whose struggles with mental illness were witnessed in the diaries of his wife Clara, and contemporary violinist Sarah Cross who shares her own memories through trauma and rediscovery.

Bound by their shared identity as musicians and their profound psychological struggles, their stories become a symphony of resilience, introspection, and redemption.

Through Schumann’s music, Clara’s writings, Sarah’s testimony, original compositions by Cosimo Carovani, and immersive visuals, the performance becomes a collective reflection on mental health — a theme that touches us all.

Mental health is no longer a marginal issue – it affects all of us: our families, our workplaces, and the communities we live in.

With Moto Contrario, we aim to contribute to this evolving conversation not through surveys or awareness campaigns, but through the connecting power of artistic performance. We envision this as the springboard to a continuing series – exploring mental health from many perspectives: patients, caregivers, clinicians, and communities. Each will use music and storytelling as an entry point to deeper reflection.

If you would like to donate to the project, there is an option for this when you purchase your ticket.
